Hadley
Hi, Lovebugs!

00:00:11:03 - 00:00:12:00
Sarah
I'm Sarah.

00:00:12:01 - 00:00:25:14
Hadley
And I'm Hadley. This week, we're heading to Rome with our friend Elizabeth to watch Lizzie McGuire go from an embarrassing junior high graduation to becoming an international pop star. Will Ethan Kraft ever get his plate of spaghetti? Let's find out in the Lizzie McGuire movie.

00:00:30:01 - 00:00:31:03
Hadley
Do you have a favorite rom com?

00:00:31:11 - 00:00:36:05
Elizabeth
Probably 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless were my two favorites growing up.

00:00:36:13 - 00:00:40:18
Sarah
Those are good ones. Do you have a least favorite rom com?

00:00:41:05 - 00:00:49:18
Elizabeth
Oh, here's one that is a unpopular opinion. I do not like Love Actually. Is that the one that is like the Christmas.

00:00:49:18 - 00:00:50:22
Sarah
Same!

00:00:50:22 - 00:00:54:20
Elizabeth
Yeah. Okay. You're the only other person I met who doesn't like it.

00:00:55:12 - 00:00:56:16
Sarah
I really don't like that movie.

00:00:57:02 - 00:01:01:11
Elizabeth
It's so hyped, though. Almost every person I know loves it.

00:01:01:11 - 00:01:18:16
Sarah
Maybe it's like everyone hating on Nickelback. I don't believe people who say they hate Nickelback. I'm like, bullshit, you rocked out to that when you were 12. Don't try to convince me otherwise. When the movie started playing spy music, I was wondering if I had accidentally played Agent Cody Banks or something.

00:01:18:20 - 00:01:23:11
Hadley
I was like, did I pick the wrong Lizzie McGuire movie? But then we see her dancing in her room.

00:01:23:12 - 00:01:29:17
Elizabeth
I just liked all of the 90s things, like the boom box and the VHS tapes.

00:01:29:21 - 00:01:32:06
Sarah
There were quite a few outfits that I wrote down.

00:01:32:08 - 00:01:34:19
Hadley
I wish I had that kind of style when I was in middle school.

00:01:34:20 - 00:01:36:02
Sarah
I was not that stylish.

00:01:36:02 - 00:01:40:23
Elizabeth
I wasn't either, although she had a brown hat on at one point, and I definitely had a black version of that.

00:01:41:00 - 00:01:43:03
Sarah
It's very early 2000s.

00:01:43:08 - 00:01:50:22
Elizabeth
Hilary Duff was definitely an icon for me growing up. I could not stop singing along with The Tide Is High while she's doing the intro singing.

00:01:50:22 - 00:01:55:07
Sarah
I definitely did some hairbrush karaoke to this song in my room when I was younger.

00:01:55:07 - 00:01:59:19
Elizabeth
I unfortunately have some of it recorded too, which I hope never sees the light of day.

00:02:01:06 - 00:02:07:19
Sarah
You didn't have a little brother that would send it to CNN. Then Lizzie tries on a bunch of outfits during this scene.

00:02:07:19 - 00:02:10:21
Elizabeth
None of them relate to what you'd wear at graduation, either.

00:02:10:23 - 00:02:15:18
Sarah
The platform shoes that she has on in the bathroom. I would have loved to see her wear those to graduation.

00:02:15:22 - 00:02:21:14
Hadley
Her graduation, but very similar to how she acted in those platform shoes, though. Falling over, tearing the curtain down.

00:02:21:18 - 00:02:24:05
Elizabeth
Very true. She was an outfit repeater.

00:02:24:09 - 00:02:29:13
Hadley
I love her inner monologue animation self being like, well, you're an outfit, remember?

00:02:29:18 - 00:02:39:15
Elizabeth
There was actually supposed to be a continuation of this right after the fact. It was going to be her in high school. They didn't pay for it.

00:02:39:15 - 00:03:02:21
Hadley
And then the movie starts with them graduating. But then there's a whole nother season of her in middle school that comes out on Disney Channel after this movie comes out. I would have loved to see Lizzie in high school. There was going to be the Lizzie McGuire reboot. Hilary Duff said that Lizzie had to be 30 years old doing 30 year old things. She didn't need to be doing bong rips and having one night stands all the time, but it had to be authentic.

00:03:02:23 - 00:03:10:09
Sarah
I do appreciate Hilary Duff turning it down because it wasn't going to be a realistic view of what life as a 30 year old would be.

00:03:10:09 - 00:03:15:03
Hadley
And now she's on How I Met Your Father. They're all in their thirties trying to navigate 30 year old life.

00:03:15:05 - 00:03:16:12
Sarah
She's also on younger.

00:03:16:13 - 00:03:24:08
Elizabeth
Younger is so good. Miranda is not in this movie and she stopped being in other things for Lizzie McGuire.

00:03:24:16 - 00:03:32:03
Hadley
She turned down the role in the movie because she wanted to go pursue her music career is the official statement.

00:03:32:04 - 00:03:34:01
Sarah
That's a bummer because I liked Miranda.

00:03:34:06 - 00:03:49:14
Elizabeth
It was a little weird because they only talked about her one time this entire movie, and it was just at the beginning when Lizzie is asking if she looks good. And Gordo's like, I think that's a thing to ask someone else. And she's like well Miranda's not here. Who missed their own graduation? Why is she not here?

00:03:50:17 - 00:03:54:08
Sarah
Honestly, I probably would have skipped graduation if I had the opportunity to travel.

00:03:54:08 - 00:04:02:03
Elizabeth
Also, for Lizzie being the speaker for graduation, how is there not a backup speaker already figured out?

00:04:02:13 - 00:04:12:23
Sarah
Honestly, her being mistaken for a pop star in Italy seems more realistic to me than her having to give the valedictorian speech, and then she struggles so hard to give that speech.

00:04:13:00 - 00:04:15:12
Hadley
I was having sympathy anxiety for her.

00:04:15:16 - 00:04:24:00
Sarah
The teacher said she just had to read Margaret's speech. I don't understand why she was struggling so much. I was like, Is she adlibbing right now? Just read it off the paper.

00:04:24:03 - 00:04:47:10
Elizabeth
And also one of the things that throughout the movie bothered me when I was thinking about it, she couldn't even get through a speech that was already pre-written for her at a little get together and then it takes 5 seconds for her to say, okay, I'm going to get up on a stage in front of a billion people and do this huge thing that's so out of character for me.

00:04:47:11 - 00:05:02:23
Elizabeth
I was like, Okay, girl, you filled with like 20 people in the audience. What are you doing? There's definitely some things thinking through it, like this seems very unrealistic. Of course, everything comes together at exactly this moment. Nothing ever works this well.

00:05:02:23 - 00:05:06:14
Hadley
She said I've got to get out of the country because of her graduation speech.

00:05:06:14 - 00:05:24:08
Sarah
It's only embarrassing if you let it be embarrassing. If she had just joined in on the joke, people wouldn't have been making fun of her. It's like when Joe in The Princess Diaries quoted Eleanor Roosevelt and said, nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. If you don't let it get to you., it's not as bad.

00:05:24:10 - 00:05:30:10
Hadley
In middle school, I would have been like, we need to move. And her brother sent the footage to the news.

00:05:30:20 - 00:05:32:06
Sarah
Matt's a little butt.

00:05:32:06 - 00:05:36:06
Elizabeth
How little news is happening that that's the main story.

00:05:36:08 - 00:05:42:06
Hadley
Maybe it's one of those lighthearted things that they try to show and they're like, war, famine, here's a puppy.

00:05:42:06 - 00:05:50:20
Elizabeth
Then when they get to the airport, Ms. Ungermeyer yells at the parents shut your pie holes. Is that appropriate?

00:05:51:14 - 00:06:01:07
Sarah
There were several times where I was like, okay, you're really funny Ms. Ungermeyer, but also, this is not how a teacher should be speaking. What is this actress's name?

00:06:01:10 - 00:06:09:14
Hadley
Alex Borstein. She's in Gilmore Girls. She's the harpist. And then she's Emily's stylist. She's also in Mrs. Maisel.

00:06:09:23 - 00:06:39:06
Sarah
All of these parents are so concerned about their kids going off to Italy. I've been watching this show on Netflix called Old Enough, and it's in Japan. It's basically these Japanese parents that send their little two and three year old toddlers to go run an errand for the first time. When I was watching that show, I was like, there's no way an American child could do this. I think independence and responsibility are a little more encouraged in other countries from a young age.

00:06:39:08 - 00:06:42:05
Elizabeth
Ethan travels with a skateboard to Italy.

00:06:42:05 - 00:06:47:01
Elizabeth
Where is he going to ride this skateboard? Does he not know they have cobblestone streets there?

00:06:47:02 - 00:06:54:18
Elizabeth
I actually was really happy when he brought that up because right when he got there with his skateboard, I was like, where do you think you're going?

00:06:54:21 - 00:06:56:20
Sarah
I don't know how he even stays on his board.

00:06:57:00 - 00:07:04:21
Elizabeth
I feel like it was more of a visual when he didn't have time. They're bussed everywhere. The only place he's skateboarding is in his room.

00:07:05:08 - 00:07:09:21
Hadley
I feel like he tried it once. It didn't go well, so he had to skateboard in the hotel instead.

00:07:09:21 - 00:07:14:10
Elizabeth
I would have loved to watch that. He actually was the person who took the longest in hair and makeup.

00:07:14:16 - 00:07:16:10
Sarah
His hair does look really good, though.

00:07:16:12 - 00:07:22:16
Elizabeth
He has really fluffy hair normally. So it took them a long time to make it look that good.

00:07:23:03 - 00:07:30:23
Hadley
The most laid back character took the longest to get ready. Ms. Ungermeyer labeled Gordo a sneaky brown noser with a hidden agenda.

00:07:30:23 - 00:07:32:18
Sarah
Well, he did try to kiss up to her.

00:07:32:20 - 00:07:34:13
Hadley
She can figure these kids out pretty well.

00:07:35:00 - 00:07:44:19
Elizabeth
Then by the time they get to Italy, when they're rooming, he tries to change his tune and be like, oh yeah, I'm fine anywhere. And she goes, so now you're spineless jellyfish.

00:07:44:21 - 00:07:56:04
Sarah
I laughed the first time she said, brown noser. And then when she said, you being a spineless little jellyfish is almost as unattractive as being a little brown noser. I was like, all right, I think we're taking it a little far here Ungermeyer.

00:07:56:04 - 00:08:03:06
Hadley
At the gate before they know Kate's coming on the trip, Ethan goes, we're going to the land where they invented spaghetti.

00:08:03:07 - 00:08:17:13
Sarah
He's very excited about all the carbs he's going to eat there. I mean, you got to have the three Ps is if you go to Italy. Pasta, pizza, panini, also gelato, but that's not a P. We see a lot of tourists sights as they're on the bus on the way to the hotel.

00:08:18:00 - 00:08:20:14
Hadley
Are any of these on the same path to get somewhere.

00:08:20:20 - 00:08:34:16
Sarah
I didn't actually pay that much attention to the order, but when they go to the fountains later in the movie, that's way outside of Rome. They went by the Colosseum in this first montage, and that's super far away from everything.

00:08:34:16 - 00:08:38:00
Hadley
I get the point of why they do it. They show all the sights, establish where they are.

00:08:38:10 - 00:08:43:18
Sarah
They get to the hotel. This hotel guy is hilarious. He's so ridiculous.

00:08:44:00 - 00:08:53:18
Hadley
At one point they were considering the guy who does the voice of Mario and Luigi to play him. When Ms. Ungermeyer is laying down the law, he just looks so frightened of her.

00:08:53:19 - 00:09:11:12
Sarah
I would be scared of her. Gordo and Ethan are roommates and Lizzie and Kate are roommates. This outfit that Kate has on, since she was critical of Lizzie's outfit earlier, she's wearing like a suit and pearls right now as a 14 year old. I don't know that she should be talking about fashion.

00:09:11:15 - 00:09:17:21
Hadley
She's definitely got career woman in their forties stereotypical fashion. The lace gloves, though, are what really threw me off.

00:09:18:00 - 00:09:21:13
Sarah
Gordo takes Lizzie up to the roof to watch the sun rise.

00:09:21:19 - 00:09:27:18
Elizabeth
Do you think that he didn't realize that he liked Lizzie at the beginning, or he just didn't want other people to realize it?

00:09:28:02 - 00:09:35:03
Sarah
I think he's just in denial based on the airplane scene when she's like falling asleep on him and he looks happy.

00:09:35:08 - 00:09:40:21
Hadley
The class goes to the Trevi Fountain and Lizzie meets Paolo who says she is identical to his singing partner, Isabella.

00:09:41:01 - 00:09:50:13
Elizabeth
That's one of those things where it's kind of unbelievable because it's like this event is happening in a couple of days and you just happen to be at the fountain to find a lookalike.

00:09:50:16 - 00:09:55:07
Hadley
Also, if he's that big of a superstar, how can he navigate the way he does through Rome?

00:09:55:09 - 00:09:59:14
Sarah
How is everyone not crowding around him at Trevi when they first meet?

00:09:59:15 - 00:10:05:15
Hadley
Some woman gives Lizzie a wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano, which costs like $2,000.

00:10:05:16 - 00:10:21:03
Sarah
I feel like she probably owns a shop down the street. That's a cheese shop. And she saw them and came running with a big wheel of cheese. That's the story I was telling myself. Gordo points out a billboard of Paolo and Isabella, and he encourages Lizzie to go on this adventure.

00:10:21:05 - 00:10:26:16
Hadley
When they're back at the hotel after first meeting Paolo. Lizzie and Gordo are talking about what she should do.

00:10:26:18 - 00:10:28:02
Sarah
He offers to cover for her.

00:10:28:03 - 00:10:30:23
Hadley
He's like, You're looking a little sick. Are you okay?

00:10:31:06 - 00:10:35:10
Sarah
I liked when she said, I'm like, physically incapable of sneaking. I felt that.

00:10:35:15 - 00:11:07:01
Elizabeth
I thought it was interesting that he pushed her to meet Paolo. At the fountain he made a comment he doesnt need to make a wish because he's in Rome with his best friend and then that night you're seeing that he's interested in Lizzie, even if he doesn't really know it. He talked about them having their adventures together and she makes a comment well our adventures are supposed to be together and he goes well no like you should go on this one. No, hang out with your friend. This is a creepy man. Even if she goes on the adventure, it'd be more fun if she brought Gordo along and it'd be more safe too.

00:11:07:08 - 00:11:10:02
Hadley
I'm surprised Gordo isn't screaming stranger danger.

00:11:10:08 - 00:11:12:03
Sarah
That seems very on brand for him.

00:11:12:07 - 00:11:21:03
Hadley
Lizzie fakes sick and the doctor that comes in says that she must be sick. He saw the graduation video on CNN and it takes a long time to recover from that kind of thing.

00:11:21:07 - 00:11:27:08
Sarah
He says she doesn't have a fever, but why would a young, beautiful girl want to stay in bed during her first visit to Rome?

00:11:27:11 - 00:11:37:16
Elizabeth
She also looks way to put together for being sick. Isn't one of the things about faking sick that you look disheveled and then afterwards you put yourself together?

00:11:37:18 - 00:11:43:01
Hadley
She could've gotten dressed beforehand, but the makeup was a little much. Then she runs off to meet Paolo at Trevi.

00:11:43:04 - 00:11:51:18
Elizabeth
All they do is smile at each other before they get on this moped. Let me go on a moped with a stranger now that I just smiled at for five seconds.

00:11:51:18 - 00:11:52:20
Hadley
Seems safe.

00:11:52:20 - 00:11:54:16
Sarah
He does not look like he's 17.

00:11:54:16 - 00:11:57:08
Hadley
No. I was like, Is this predatory?

00:11:57:08 - 00:12:11:21
Sarah
It is. Because she's supposed to be graduating eighth grade, which makes her 14. The fact that she ends up choosing to believe Paolo, this man, she's known for like two days over Gordo, her best friend of years, blew my mind.

00:12:12:03 - 00:12:19:12
Elizabeth
Getting on a moped with somebody right after you meet them, if I were your parent, you'd be so grounded. That's so unsafe.

00:12:20:01 - 00:12:28:17
Sarah
Especially getting on the Vespa after Lizzie says, Do you know how to drive this thing? Paolo is like, No, but we're in Rome, nobody knows how to drive. Don't get on that.

00:12:29:00 - 00:12:34:02
Hadley
Luckily, it looked like they go so slow she could easily just walk off of it and it'd be fine.

00:12:34:06 - 00:12:35:20
Sarah
Just roll off to the side.

00:12:36:03 - 00:12:39:10
Elizabeth
Really like the song that they played while they were on the moped.

00:12:39:10 - 00:12:39:21
Sarah
Volare.

00:12:39:22 - 00:12:46:09
Hadley
I love the soundtrack for this movie. We get a little shot back at home where Matt is scheming with his friend Melina

00:12:46:13 - 00:12:47:10
Sarah
She's kinda mean.

00:12:47:17 - 00:12:50:11
Elizabeth
She's the brains behind all of Matt's deviousness.

00:12:50:11 - 00:12:57:16
Hadley
You can tell because when they go to Rome later, he pulls out his blackmail suitcase in front of his parents. Melina would never do that.

00:12:57:20 - 00:13:15:11
Elizabeth
When Gordo sees Lizzie in the moped in front of them, they somehow always end up in the exact same spots as the school bus of people. Rome isnt that small. It seems a little unbelievable because of course, everything else is believable in this movie apart from that, but you know.

00:13:15:11 - 00:13:30:00
Sarah
Lizzie and Paolo are walking through the farmer's market at Campo de Fiore, and Lizzie asks Paolo if he still loves Isabella, and he says, Like a sister. You could say that in a less weird way Paolo. Why compare her to a family member.

00:13:30:00 - 00:13:35:19
Elizabeth
Especially if you're trying to woo this other girl who looks exactly the same.

00:13:35:21 - 00:13:43:13
Sarah
This is when he enlists Lizzie to replace Isabella because he said he wanted to do more serious music but Isabella didn't want to.

00:13:43:16 - 00:14:03:10
Elizabeth
He comes up with a sob story where Isabella lip syncs, and she's gonna be sued if she doesn't perform and he just wants to help her because he wants her to be okay. But I thought there is definitely some foreshadowing where he was like, Oh, I don't lip sync. And then he goes, La la la la la. That does not give any impression that you know how to sing.

00:14:03:11 - 00:14:06:01
Sarah
His Italian accent isn't very good either.

00:14:06:02 - 00:14:09:07
Hadley
That could be another twist in the movie. He's not even actually Italian.

00:14:09:13 - 00:14:36:21
Elizabeth
I know that for the sake of a movie that it has to be in English, but how many people just default speak English and they bring it up at one point when she's trying on clothes later on as Isabella, they were telling her designer she's trying to speak English so you can only speak to her in English. But I'm like everybody before that was speaking to her in English, too. And if it really is Isabella, wouldn't everybody be speaking in Italian to begin with.

00:14:37:02 - 00:14:39:18
Hadley
Back at the hotel, Lizzie tells Gordo everything that happens.

00:14:39:18 - 00:14:54:17
Elizabeth
Lizzie fell so quickly for this guy. All of a sudden, she's roped into a plan day one of hanging out with him, and she's presenting an award for somebody, even though she can't do her junior high graduation. Gordo calls it out.

00:14:54:18 - 00:14:57:00
Hadley
She doesn't want to listen to anything Gordo has to say.

00:14:57:10 - 00:15:01:08
Elizabeth
But then Lizzie says, you're such a good friend and Ethan calls it the sting.

00:15:01:14 - 00:15:06:01
Sarah
I'm surprised by Ethan's ability to observe what's going on.

00:15:06:02 - 00:15:15:09
Hadley
There's one thing I always quote from the TV show. Someone says to him, well you can walk the walk, but can you talk the talk? And he goes, I can walk and talk. At the same time.

00:15:15:09 - 00:15:20:03
Sarah
I'm supposed to believe that the person who said that can see that Gordo likes Lizzie. I don't know about that.

00:15:20:08 - 00:15:31:22
Elizabeth
Later on, ask me about reading the books and he's like, I finished it and they finished all eleven books. He goes, No, I finished the book list. Some things just a little over the head and others are just so there.

00:15:32:01 - 00:15:37:02
Hadley
Maybe talking to girls is his thing because he tries to coach Gordo later.

00:15:37:03 - 00:15:51:16
Sarah
Maybe he's good at reading people, just not reading books. Matt and Melina see a tabloid online featuring Lizzie and Paolo. This web page looked so old, I didn't even realize how far the Internet had come in 20 years.

00:15:51:23 - 00:15:56:19
Elizabeth
Well, she suggests selling the videos to the Italian tabloids.

00:15:57:00 - 00:16:00:05
Sarah
She's upset that Matt didn't make any money off his first video.

00:16:00:12 - 00:16:03:10
Hadley
And he pulls out his giant suitcase of blackmail.

00:16:03:16 - 00:16:05:19
Sarah
I'm glad I didn't have a little brother like him.

00:16:05:21 - 00:16:09:00
Elizabeth
She gets homework the next day when she's sick.

00:16:09:00 - 00:16:10:14
Hadley
Some light reading material.

00:16:10:21 - 00:16:16:12
Sarah
The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire and she's supposed to write two book reports. One on the rise, one on the fall.

00:16:16:23 - 00:16:22:07
Elizabeth
And then the song that plays in the background in the next scene is her song, Why Not.

00:16:22:12 - 00:16:24:06
Hadley
I wish Hilary Duff still made music.

00:16:24:08 - 00:16:31:23
Sarah
I saw an interview from her where she was talking about how her kids always want to listen to her music in the car and she doesn't want to, but they love her music.

00:16:32:03 - 00:16:33:21
Hadley
I used to sing Why Not all the time.

00:16:34:04 - 00:16:35:00
Elizabeth
Yes, you did.

00:16:35:01 - 00:16:41:03
Hadley
Elizabeth will be the person when people are like Hadley, why aren't you a professional singer? She'll be like, Oh, let me tell you.

00:16:41:07 - 00:17:10:04
Elizabeth
I can't say anything about that because I'm so terrible at singing. My biggest moment of realizing how bad I was was a friend of mine and I were in the car, my dog was in the backseat. We started singing. My dog literally went, [groaning noise]. It's like, if your dog doesn't even, like you're singing. No career. Never. It's never going to happen. Then they go to get an outfit. And how does nobody realize it's not Isabella?

00:17:10:04 - 00:17:13:04
Hadley
They're like, Oh, your hair is blond. And she's like, It's the sun.

00:17:13:05 - 00:17:33:01
Elizabeth
I'm glad that the head designer looked for a second. I was like, something's not right. Somebody in that place must have been like, this isn't the same person. She's probably worked with them before. It's one thing if you're fooling people from far away, but if you're close up to somebody and seeing how they talk and act, it just becomes a little unbelievable.

00:17:33:15 - 00:17:41:05
Sarah
It's one thing to look like somebody, but she doesn't have any of the same mannerisms or the same attitude as we find out.

00:17:41:12 - 00:17:54:19
Elizabeth
But she gains a little attitude at the end of her fashion show. She ends is being like, oh, I get to say how I feel about something. That's one of the first times you see her become a little more assured of herself.

00:17:54:23 - 00:18:14:12
Sarah
These outfits. Here's how I described them. The first one was a tinfoil dress. Second one rope lighting dress. Third gunmetal gray dress that the dog unravels. And then the blow up igloo dress. And then the citrus green Marie Antoinette style dress, which is called rococo.

00:18:14:17 - 00:18:22:23
Hadley
How do the strings in the hat connect to the skirt to make the skirt go up? I looked closely when they give it a close up, nothing going down the back that connects.

00:18:23:00 - 00:18:32:17
Elizabeth
I don't know either. That's exactly what I was thinking. Also, she probably shouldn't be pulling things. I would probably pushed to the side not be pulling down in front of my face.

00:18:33:02 - 00:18:36:17
Sarah
Especially after the dog unraveled a dress already.

00:18:36:21 - 00:18:42:13
Hadley
Also, her white ice blue lipstick with the igloo dress was nice early 2000s.

00:18:42:20 - 00:18:44:18
Elizabeth
I definitely had that lipstick.

00:18:45:00 - 00:19:01:10
Hadley
While she's off doing her fashion show, the school groups out shopping around and Gordo sees the magazine that has Lizzie on the cover. He's like, I'm going to go get a copy of that. But Ethan's looking at the little sculpture and he's like, This guy spent way too much time on his biceps and not enough on his abs.

00:19:01:11 - 00:19:06:13
Sarah
This is also when Kate says she doesn't eat carbs. Girl eat carbs.

00:19:06:19 - 00:19:11:08
Hadley
After Lizzie and Paolo leave the designer session, she does a cartwheel.

00:19:11:09 - 00:19:19:00
Sarah
She did it at the Spanish Steps. With how clumsy she is, she should probably not be doing a cartwheel that close to steps.

00:19:19:00 - 00:19:21:00
Hadley
That's a lot of steps to fall down.

00:19:21:04 - 00:19:24:19
Sarah
That'd be a funny outtake too. Her just like rolling all the way down those steps.

00:19:24:20 - 00:19:27:09
Hadley
I'm surprised her little animated character didn't do that.

00:19:27:13 - 00:19:42:02
Sarah
Continuity errors. The class was just at the Forum when Kate was saying she didn't want carbs and Gordo found the tabloid. But now they're at the Spanish Steps, which is where they run into Lizzie and Paolo, though they're not anywhere near each other.

00:19:42:14 - 00:19:50:05
Hadley
That happen to be way emptier than I feel like they are in real life. Cause it was shot in Rome, so props to them for actually going there.

00:19:50:06 - 00:19:53:08
Sarah
Kate's upset that no Italian guys have asked her out yet.

00:19:53:12 - 00:20:02:08
Hadley
She has a good arc. She gets redeemed. I like that they didn't make her mean for the whole movie. She's mean a little bit up top and then she's just kind of there and then she's a friend.

00:20:02:11 - 00:20:08:17
Sarah
I mean, how bad really is the insult that you're an outfit repeater? Clothes are meant to be worn more than once.

00:20:08:19 - 00:20:18:19
Hadley
I love how they sneak Lizzie back into the hotel when they see there's someone at the desk. Paolo asks the front desk guy to help him with this umbrella, and the hotel guy replies, It's not raining. Why do you have an umbrella out?

00:20:18:23 - 00:20:22:10
Sarah
Sergei gets in Ungermeyer's way in the elevator.

00:20:22:16 - 00:20:28:21
Hadley
He says it's not safe. And then when Lizzie's upstairs, he says, Now it's safe and let's Ungermeyer out.

00:20:28:22 - 00:20:30:09
Elizabeth
I really liked him.

00:20:30:12 - 00:20:34:01
Hadley
Lizzie actually uses a hairdryer to warm her head when they get back,

00:20:34:01 - 00:20:48:03
Hadley
But she's just had her hair done and all this stuff. Thank goodness Kate calls it out because I was like, how does a teacher not notice that she has makeup on and she's had her hair done and she probably smells like hair salon.

00:20:48:03 - 00:20:51:12
Hadley
Kate says that she could smell acetone from the moment she walked in the lobby.

00:20:51:12 - 00:20:55:01
Sarah
And Kate noticed that Lizzie got her eyebrows done. Finally.

00:20:55:12 - 00:21:04:17
Hadley
Lizzie tells Kate about the Paolo situation and Kate's grumpy Lizzie's getting the trip Kate wanted, but she promises to keep quiet if Lizzie keeps quiet about her knowing.

00:21:05:00 - 00:21:07:03
Sarah
Kate is very relatable in this movie.

00:21:07:09 - 00:21:18:07
Elizabeth
They used to be friends. That was part of the show, and then they weren't anymore once she became popular, so it makes sense that there would be something that would draw them back together.

00:21:18:07 - 00:21:24:12
Hadley
Gordo found out that Lizzie is actually supposed to sing at the awards, and for some reason Lizzie doesn't believe him.

00:21:24:14 - 00:21:33:16
Sarah
I think deep down, Lizzie knows that Gordo has feelings for her. It'd be hard to be oblivious to that. I think. So maybe she thinks he's jealous and he's just trying to mess it up for her.

00:21:33:20 - 00:21:47:22
Elizabeth
I'm pretty oblivious to people liking me so I could see her being oblivious to it. You have to spell it out for me. Lizzie seems to be very oblivious and has so much anxiety about things that I could see her not thinking that somebody would like her.

00:21:48:03 - 00:21:52:14
Hadley
She's so into Paolo at this point that she'd be like, nah, he's a great guy. We're soulmates.

00:21:52:15 - 00:22:04:22
Sarah
She's got rose colored glasses on. When Gordo gets to their room. Lizzie says that Kate figured out the parallel universe twin thing, and Gordo says, evil and smart. And Kate replies, embrace it, fear it.

00:22:05:00 - 00:22:06:20
Hadley
I love her so much in this movie.

00:22:06:21 - 00:22:13:03
Sarah
This is when Paolo shows up in that little red car with a cage on top. I feel like it could roll down a hill and they'd be fine.

00:22:13:05 - 00:22:17:14
Elizabeth
Another time of getting into a car with a stranger and going off to who knows where.

00:22:17:18 - 00:22:23:06
Hadley
Back at Lizzie's house, Matt's trying to convince the parents to go to Italy and they're like, yeah, let's get our passports.

00:22:23:06 - 00:22:40:11
Sarah
When they were planning their trip, I was like, is this really necessary? A last minute trip? This would be so expensive. And you're going to buy three plane tickets. I want to know what her parents do for work. How do they afford last minute plane tickets to Italy? When Matt was showing them the data, he was like, all right, you caught me.

00:22:40:11 - 00:22:42:04
Sarah
And the mom was like, I always do.

00:22:42:14 - 00:23:06:10
Elizabeth
They did catch him, though, one time because he played sick in the TV series and she heard him talking on the phone about how he was playing sick and so she spent the whole day making him roll yarn and try out really gross tasting food. He ended up getting sick from what she was doing to punish him for faking sick. So she's caught him in the past.

00:23:06:17 - 00:23:11:15
Hadley
Lizzie's in the little funny car with Paolo out in the country. They must have been driving for a long time.

00:23:11:19 - 00:23:37:03
Sarah
They're going to a different city. It's just outside Rome. It's called Tivoli. He's gaslighting her, though, because she immediately confronted him about the performance and he was like, don't worry about it. When they're at that fountain, he promises to never embarrass her. What the hell? Then they watch fireworks as the song Open Your Eyes plays. And Lizzie says, this is so beautiful. He says, yes, you are. I rolled my eyes.

00:23:37:11 - 00:23:41:18
Hadley
All their scenes would be really cute if he weren't malicious and kind of sleazy.

00:23:41:22 - 00:23:47:07
Elizabeth
Then it shows Gordo alone watching the same fireworks. It's heart breaking.

00:23:47:07 - 00:23:56:19
Hadley
Poor little Gordo. Lizzie's family is on the airplane coming to meet up with her. And this is where Matt pulls out his blackmail suitcase right in front of the parents.

00:23:57:02 - 00:24:06:13
Sarah
He spills the beans about Lizzie's fame and then Gordo tries to block Ungermeyer to help out Lizzie. And he gets in trouble and gets sent home.

00:24:06:21 - 00:24:22:02
Elizabeth
Then we go to where Lizzie's learning to lip sync and dance. And this is the night before the performance. And it's the one time that they're lip synching and dancing. That's it? She has one chance to learn it.

00:24:22:02 - 00:24:28:09
Hadley
Paolo's so suspicious. She's like, Well, you weren't singing. And he's like, No. And he just brushes it off and moves on.

00:24:28:14 - 00:24:53:01
Elizabeth
And there are no backup dancers in this little private performance of them learning to sing and dance. But then in the performance, there are backup dancers and it's like you couldn't even speak at a graduation, and now in one day you're supposed to learn a song, a dance, and then have random parts appear that were not in the practice round. And be confident with that. I don't get it.

00:24:53:06 - 00:24:59:08
Sarah
Especially that they're supposed to be practicing for this big performance that they're going to do at the Colosseum.

00:24:59:11 - 00:25:09:21
Elizabeth
And this would have had to been scheduled for a pretty long time before hand. So how is it that this just conveniently happens right before this major performance?

00:25:09:21 - 00:25:13:10
Hadley
Right. What was Paolo's game plan if he didn't find Lizzie at the fountain.

00:25:13:13 - 00:25:26:20
Sarah
But also how lucky for his plan that he just happened to find someone who looked exactly like Isabella, who also knows how to sing and dance, because if he had been teaching me a dance the day before, it would not have looked the same.

00:25:27:07 - 00:25:28:00
Elizabeth
Agreed.

00:25:28:12 - 00:25:30:02
Hadley
I would have just cried on stage.

00:25:30:05 - 00:25:38:18
Sarah
This outfit that she has on, though, while they're practicing, she's wearing like a purple shirt with crochet fishnet sleeves and a handkerchief skirt.

00:25:38:22 - 00:25:54:01
Elizabeth
It was a lot. Gordo just casually runs into Isabella at the airport, and she's speaking English as she's asking who this person is and what's going on and I was like, she would have been speaking Italian. Come on. We could have done with subtitles.

00:25:54:05 - 00:26:02:10
Sarah
I thought she had a better Italian accent than Paolo. I mean, it's not great. Don't get me wrong, but it was slightly better than Paolo's.

00:26:02:10 - 00:26:09:04
Hadley
Lizzie goes back to the hotel and finds out Gordo got sent home. And Kate's like, you can't stop him, what will sacrifice before if you do that.

00:26:09:05 - 00:26:38:02
Elizabeth
The parents show up at this hotel right before the concert night. Everything's timed out very well. The parents find that Lizzie's not in the room when they asked Ethan about where everybody is and he casually answers like, Well, they're probably at the So-and-so Awards Show where Lizzie is being the duplicate for this and that. He said, why does everybody act like this around me where they're just surprised by him? I just couldn't stop laughing at Ethan and his responses to things. I thought he was really great comedic relief.

00:26:38:19 - 00:26:53:04
Sarah
We see Lizzie and Paolo on the red carpet while You're A Shining Star is playing and Lizzie trips. But Paolo gives her a pep talk. Says she shines like the light from the sun, which gave me a major fuck boy vibes.

00:26:53:14 - 00:27:01:16
Elizabeth
It's a good thing he has the same line for everybody because that's what makes Lizzie believe Isabella and Gordo later on.

00:27:01:16 - 00:27:07:19
Hadley
Isabella shows up, shares all the dirt about everything happening, and Gordo backs her up. And then Lizzie still doesn't believe Gordo.

00:27:07:19 - 00:27:12:17
Sarah
Lizzie is like, Paolo would never hurt me. Uh, you've known him for two days. How do you know that?

00:27:12:18 - 00:27:25:08
Elizabeth
A devil's advocate way of thinking about this was that Gordo just met Isabella a couple hours ago so she could technically be lying to him just as much as Paolo could be lying to Lizzie.

00:27:25:08 - 00:27:35:08
Sarah
I had the same thought. Isabella was like, Who are you going to believe? This boy you've known for a couple of days, or this boy you've known your whole life? But the boy she's known her whole life has only known you a couple hours

00:27:35:08 - 00:27:40:08
Hadley
And he's been anti Paolo for a while. You find out Paolo's out to destroy Isabella's career.

00:27:40:08 - 00:27:45:05
Sarah
They hatch a plan to make Paolo sing for real because he's the one who can't sing.

00:27:45:06 - 00:27:54:19
Elizabeth
I was surprised that behind the stage, nobody seemed to realize that all of a sudden the real Isabella showed up. Nobody questions why there's a blond woman and a brunet one.

00:27:54:23 - 00:28:00:14
Hadley
The parents and the class are trying to get in, and Ms. Ungermeyer takes things into her own hands and gets them in.

00:28:00:15 - 00:28:03:17
Sarah
Literally. She knocks out the security.

00:28:03:17 - 00:28:04:22
Elizabeth
She's scary.

00:28:04:22 - 00:28:06:09
Sarah
She's intimidating for sure.

00:28:06:17 - 00:28:13:12
Hadley
They go on stage to sing, and Isabella says she'll cover for Lizzie. Paulo's mic is turned off and he is not a good singer.

00:28:13:16 - 00:28:19:02
Elizabeth
I thought it was cute that Sergei quit right after Paolo tried hurting Lizzie.

00:28:19:07 - 00:28:23:22
Sarah
How rare for someone who is employed by a shitty famous person to actually speak out against them.

00:28:24:00 - 00:28:25:13
Elizabeth
They must not have had an NDA.

00:28:25:15 - 00:28:27:10
Sarah
He was quick to talk to the press.

00:28:27:13 - 00:28:45:23
Elizabeth
Lizzie has so much confidence to be on stage after Isabella leaves her and she's on stage by herself and all of a sudden she's like, yeah, I can sing even though I've never taken a singing lesson in my life. And I know this whole dance that there were no backup dancers when I did my one practice the night before.

00:28:46:00 - 00:28:49:23
Hadley
Isabella's singing voice is Haylie Duff. Hilary Duff's sister.

00:28:50:00 - 00:29:04:14
Sarah
There's a part in the song where it's Lizzie with her hands up, like, shaking. And you can see. The Coliseum full of people. Her voice sounded different in that part of the song. Could Hilary Duff not sing that part? I don't understand.

00:29:04:19 - 00:29:17:14
Elizabeth
I notice that difference. I wondered if Isabella was singing behind the stage and that was where that different voice came from. It was so different, but it probably wasn't.

00:29:17:21 - 00:29:25:12
Sarah
It was noticeably different. I was like, what is going on? Hilary Duff is a pretty good singer. I don't know why they didn't just let her sing the song

00:29:25:12 - 00:29:47:01
Elizabeth
On stage, she sees her parents as well after she's done and kind of waves at them. I feel like the lights would be pretty bright and you wouldn't really be able to see who was sitting in the audience that well. They have the press meet at the hotel, which I thought was weird choice. More related to the limited backgrounds maybe for the movie.

00:29:47:04 - 00:29:48:23
Hadley
Ethan finally gets his spaghetti.

00:29:48:23 - 00:29:53:01
Sarah
Kate finally eats some carbs. I'm sure her body is grateful.

00:29:53:03 - 00:29:58:13
Hadley
And she commits to eating those! He's twirling it on a spoon and she's just like, no big bite.

00:29:58:14 - 00:30:02:04
Sarah
That's how I eat my pasta, too. So I get it. Just shovel it all down.

00:30:02:14 - 00:30:08:00
Elizabeth
I like when she said, The only thing I know now is I don't know anything. And Ethan goes that's hot.

00:30:08:08 - 00:30:12:01
Hadley
Not knowing things makes her a little more relatable to Ethan.

00:30:12:05 - 00:30:14:06
Elizabeth
Are you saying he doesn't know things?

00:30:14:11 - 00:30:16:12
Sarah
Lizzie's parents ground her.

00:30:16:21 - 00:30:31:14
Hadley
They're super proud of her, but she's grounded for the rest of the summer. I get it. She, like, ran off with a stranger, did a lot of things they probably taught her not to do. It worked out really well for her. But, like, that's also how you get murdered. Gordo and Ms. Ungermeyer make up.

00:30:31:16 - 00:30:35:05
Sarah
She finally has a nice name for him and calls him a loyal friend.

00:30:35:11 - 00:30:43:10
Hadley
I'm really happy for his anxiety that he doesn't have to go to high school with her, thinking that he's a sneaky brown noser with a hidden agenda.

00:30:43:13 - 00:30:51:07
Sarah
Ungermeyer and Sergei fight over a sammy. She says he's still on her list and he says, As long as I'm at the top.

00:30:51:10 - 00:30:59:22
Hadley
And Matt tries to sell his blackmail to the hotel guy and the hotel guy throws it in the fountain. Melina is going to be so mad when he gets back.

00:31:00:05 - 00:31:05:10
Sarah
She's a problem solver. I think she'll figure out how to still blackmail Lizzie and make money.

00:31:05:15 - 00:31:14:17
Hadley
Probably cut out Matt. He's kind of a middle man that's not bringing in any income. Lizzie and Gordo go up to the roof, and Gordo talks about how Lizzie had it in her the whole time.

00:31:14:17 - 00:31:18:12
Elizabeth
And Lizzie kisses him! And he says thanks.

00:31:19:21 - 00:31:21:08
Hadley
And she says, you're welcome!

00:31:21:21 - 00:31:28:19
Sarah
It reminds me of when Dean on Gilmore Girls told Rory that he loved her. Didn't she say thanks?

00:31:29:03 - 00:31:33:14
Hadley
Lizzie handled this much better than Dean did. I would've liked to see them in high school.

00:31:33:17 - 00:31:37:08
Sarah
I want to know if they started dating or if this was just like a one time kiss.

00:31:37:08 - 00:31:49:02
Elizabeth
What I read is that they were supposed to start dating, but in the reboot that they were going to put together recently for adult Lizzie McGuire, they did not end up together.

00:31:49:11 - 00:31:53:23

I don't see them together long term, but I think they'd be a nice little high school couple.

Good first relationship for the two of them. This movie was cute. If you can get past all the unrealistic parts of it, which is most of it, it's really fun.

00:32:02:21 - 00:32:10:14
Sarah
So much of it is unrealistic, but that's kind of a common theme for rom coms. You gotta to suspend your disbelief a little.

And for Disney movies. So put them together. And here you go.

00:32:14:07 - 00:32:18:21
Elizabeth
I think that's what makes these movies so fun, though, is that it's not realistic.

I really like her outfit at the end when they're on the roof and they kiss her like polka dot dress. Her hair looks really nice, too. Oh, and I loved her outfit from the award show. It was kind of giving euphoria vibes.

Hadley
I thought it was funny that Isabella showed up in the same color as that one dress from the fashion show. I hope someone wears the igloo dress somewhere in that world. I'd like to see that.

00:32:42:14 - 00:32:50:21
Sarah
That would be a really good outfit to wear during COVID. Just go grocery shopping and that igloo dress to keep people away from you.

Sarah
Our song pairing for this movie is Best of Both Worlds by Hannah Montana.

Hadley
Lizzie is leading the quiet lifestyle and Isabella is leading the pop star lifestyle. Also, they're both blonde and brunette, and they're Disney Channel stars. It all kind of works together.

00:33:06:09 - 00:33:08:23
Sarah
A lot of parallels.
